I’m an enthusiastic knitter and started creating my own designs a few years ago. My Celtic Botanical Knit project is an effort to bring modern day Druid sensibilities into the craft of knitting. As often as possible, the ancient Irish script called Ogam that represents the plant on the design is incorporated into the design.
Ogam (pronounced owam) is the name of the ancient Irish writing that was first used almost 2000 years ago. Each “few”(letter) is created by making slash marks against a vertical line and each one is connected to a particular tree or plant. Most patterns have a few words about the ancient and current uses of the plant on the pattern. For more information, search “Ogam” or “Ogham” on your favorite search engine. All patterns can be found on Ravelry.com, EarthFaire.com, and Patternfish.com.
